About the name

The Serjantson name is an English patronymic name derived from a father or ancestor. One belief is that Serjantson, Sergeantson and Sarjantson is the derivative of Sergeant's son or the son of a Sergeant. [1] A sergeant was a servant. [2]

Regional spelling and the old vs new world.
About the 17th century, the Serjantson name appears to be fairly standard in its spelling within Crowle, Lincolnshire. But later on, the name spelling seems to shift to Sergeantson and similar spellings and appears more reflective of its potential naming origins (Sergeant son), at least from the perspective of modern English words and usage. This area still being refined.

Further Info

Joan Reid (external link) has been conducting a study on the variant of the Sarginson family and has some really good information about which counties the other variants may have been more dominant. See: this page (exernal link) for further information. She also welcomes contact from those interested in all Sarginson variants.
